PERTH FESTIVAL OPENING EVENTS
2016 & 2017

In 2015 Perth Festival began work on a hugely ambitious series of large scale events: extraordinary outdoor spectacles, rooted in the identity of Western Australia, that explore the challenges we face and offer a vision of our future.

These are the first two events:

BEFORE THE SIREN

Lara Thoms & Snapcat

Melbourne artist Lara Thoms and Perth collaborative duo Snapcat celebrate women and belonging with a public event culminating at Fremantle Oval.

With the Freo Dockers being one of only eight teams selected for the inaugural AFL National Women's league in 2017, Before the Siren is a timely exploration of how women gather socially, politically and recreationally across generations.

Community activism, art and sport combine to capture the spirit of women's sports teams, girl gangs, social clubs and business groups.

This video shows the feel good finale.

MUSEUM OF WATER

Western Australia

Museum of Water is a radically different museum that showcases, in Australia's driest state, our connection to the world's most essential life-force. For over eighteen months Amy Sharrocks and Perth artists towed a rusty trailer around the State, turning strangers into friends and liquid into art collecting watery donations and the memories that go with them.

The Museum of Water was presented at Fremantle Arts Centre for seven weeks and attended by over 15,000 people. The collection has been acquired by the Western Australian Museum.
